Luxury Is A Mindset, Not a Price Tag.
Redefining Luxury
When most people hear the word luxury, they picture price tags. Designer handbags, five-star hotels, first-class flights, champagne on a rooftop. And there's nothing wrong with any of those things. I love beautiful things as much as anyone.
But some of the most luxurious moments of my life haven't cost a single dollar.
For a long time, I believed luxury was something waiting for me at a future version of my life, when I had more money, more success, or more time. What I eventually learned changed everything: luxury isn't something you buy. It's something you create. It's a feeling, a standard, and a way of being present in your own life.
And the most surprising lesson about luxury didn't come from a spa or a boutique. It came from learning how to walk.
The Hardest Meditation
I once attended a full-day meditation practice. The day was filled with different activities, each one designed to bring us back into our bodies and into the present moment.
I expected the stillness to be challenging. Sitting quietly with my thoughts, focusing on my breath, letting go of distractions. Those were the practices I assumed would test me.
But do you know what the hardest practice of the entire day was?
Walking slowly.
That's it. Just walking, as slowly and mindfully as possible, feeling every step.
It sounds simple enough, right? I thought so too. But within moments, I felt restless. My mind raced ahead of my feet. My body wanted to speed up. I felt frustrated, impatient, and almost uncomfortable in my own skin. It was as though every part of me was fighting against the simple act of slowing down.
That's when I realized just how deeply conditioned I was to rush.
Why Slowing Down Feels So Hard
Most of us live our lives in a constant hurry. We rush to work, rush through meals, rush through conversations, and rush from one task to the next. We scroll while we eat, plan tomorrow while we're still in today, and measure our worth by how much we got done.
Our bodies feel it, too. Living in a constant state of urgency keeps us in stress mode, flooding our systems with stress hormones like cortisol. Over time, that rushing starts to feel normal. Calm starts to feel unfamiliar, and stillness feels almost uncomfortable.
So when we finally try to slow down, our minds and bodies resist. We fight against everything we've been conditioned to do. That frustration I felt during the slow walk wasn't a sign that I was doing it wrong. It was a sign of how much I needed it.
And then, slowly, something shifted.
As I let go of the urge to rush, I started to notice things. The warmth of the sunshine on my skin. The gentle breeze moving past me. The sounds of the world carrying on around me. For the first time in a long time, I felt life happening alongside me, not against me.
It was one of the most beautiful feelings I've ever experienced. And it cost nothing.
That's when I understood: true luxury is presence. It's having the peace and freedom to fully experience your own life.
Creating Luxury at Home
That lesson followed me home, and it transformed the way I care for myself.
I realized I don't have to wait for a vacation or a spa day to feel luxurious. I can create that feeling in my everyday life, right where I am.
Luxury became taking a walk in complete silence, no phone, no music, no rushing, just me and the world around me. It became giving myself a home facial on a quiet evening, taking my time with every step as though I were my own favourite client. It became turning an ordinary shower into a ritual, with the warm water, a beautiful scent, and the intention of washing away the day.
It became doing my self-care slowly and lovingly instead of squeezing it in between obligations. Lighting a candle. Making a cup of tea and actually sitting down to enjoy it. Putting on something that makes me feel beautiful, even if no one else will see it.
None of these things are extravagant. But when you do them with intention, they feel extraordinary. That's the difference. Luxury isn't about the price of what you're doing. It's about the presence and love you bring to it.
When you treat yourself with that level of care, something powerful happens. You begin to feel worthy of it. And when you feel worthy of luxury in your everyday life, you naturally start to expect more, attract more, and accept nothing less.
Luxury as a Way of Living
This is the heart of an Elevated Luxury Mindset. Luxury isn't reserved for someday. It's available to you right now, in how you move through your days.
It's choosing presence over rushing. Quality over quantity. Intention over obligation. It's romanticizing your life, not because everything is perfect, but because you've decided your life is worth savouring.
And this mindset doesn't stay in your self-care routine. It flows into everything. When you slow down, you make clearer decisions. When you feel calm, you lead with confidence. When you treat yourself as someone worthy of luxury, you show up in your relationships, your career, and your business as someone who expects and creates excellence.
You don't need a bigger budget to start living luxuriously. You need a new way of seeing your life.
So slow down. Feel the sunshine. Notice the breeze. Let life happen alongside you.
That is luxury.
Reflect and Elevate
Find a quiet moment, perhaps with a cup of tea or after a slow walk, and reflect on these questions.
What did luxury mean to you before reading this chapter? What does it mean to you now?
Where in your life are you constantly rushing? What would it look like to slow down there?
List five simple, low-cost or free things that make you feel luxurious.
Which everyday routine could you turn into a ritual this week?
Take a slow, silent walk, even for ten minutes. What did you notice that you usually miss?
How might slowing down change the way you show up in your relationships, work, or business?
Remember: luxury isn't what you buy. It's how you live.
